Consumption of Indonesian Children's Fruits and Vegetables is Still Low

Fruits and vegetables are the foods most often rejected by children. This makes the consumption of fruits and vegetables in Indonesia is still very low.

Beko Indonesia Country General Manager Ali Cagri Gonculer said the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming 5 servings of vegetables and fruits or about 400 grams per day.

"Unfortunately, based on Beko's global survey, only 1 in 5 children knows the recommended daily amount of food and fruit. In Asia, the ratio is much worse. While in Indonesia, Riskesdas 2018 has chosen only 5 percent of Indonesians to consume enough fruits and vegetables, "Gonculer said in his press statement.

Gonculer continued, The benefits of consumption of vegetables and fruit as recommended can not be denied anymore. From body health problems, diversion of digestion, to prevention of various non-communicable diseases, and the problem of obesity in children

"This encourages us to initiate the Eating Like a Pro campaign. This campaign invites parents, especially mothers, to pay more attention to healthy intake for children. One of them, by preparing nutrient-rich snacks to support tourist activities and children's growth," said Gonculer.

Renowned chef or chef, Steby Rafael said, often encountered by children who are reluctant, even completely refused, eat both types of sources of nutrients and vitamins. They become food pickers or 'food pickers' and only want to buy those invited.

"In fact, children need a variety of vegetables and fruits every day to support the body's needs and daily activities. Early habits become a key factor related to love and not children to eat vegetables and fruit," said Chef Steby.

Chef Steby shares the challenge of making children love vegetables and fruit. For example, by cutting fresh fruit (various colors and types) into small pieces so that children can easily cut it. Serve with attractive color combinations and serve in cool conditions or fill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before serving. Also, serve a bowl smoothie topped with freshly cut pieces of fruit, such as those used by cartoon characters or flower displays, so that children are interested and tempted to eat it.

"To make it easier for children to consume, smoothies with a smooth texture can be an alternative. Combining the types of fruit or vegetables that are acidic, as well as providing different colors can produce an attraction that is suitable for children," lid Chef Steby.
